Amazon surprised me with the LA-EA5 yesterday. There was no shipping notice or anything. The last I heard from them, they asked my approval for a shipping delay until December because the item was backordered.
Hooray for good surprises (and for being home so it didn't disappear from my porch)!
I'll have time this weekend to test it out thoroughly, weather permitting. But my gut impressions from just briefly trying out several lenses are as follows:
1. Hunting is noticeably better than the LA-EA4r (which I also have). It still hunts, but is faster to focus overall.
2. For SSM lenses, it seems faster to focus and track than what I remember from my LA-EA3*.
3. It also seems to focus MUCH more reliably in low light than the LA-EA3*.
4. Focus accuracy seems very good/great. Lenses that typically required MFA on my A99ii needed no adjustment here, and were consistently sharper.
5. The Tamron 35/1.8 and 85/1.8 focus nearly as fast as any other SSM lens when attached. Again, this feels like a big improvement on the LA-EA3*.
6. Using the Minolta 500/8 Reflex, you will NOT have access to all of the focus points across the frame. It's limited to a cluster of them in the center.
7. The A99ii is faster to focus with every lens I tested -- sometimes much faster -- but the A7Riv/LA-EA5 combo is no slouch. I think it would be very usable for most situations I tend to shoot.
*NOTE: I'm comparing to the last time I used the LA-EA3 on the A7Riii, so the camera might be making a lot of the difference.
These are just my gut impressions, though, and subject to change. More testing to come this weekend.
